UK Sport Set Games Medal Target – The London Evening Standard

Britain has been set at an official target of fourth place in the medals table at the London Olympics with at least 48 medals won across 12 sports. The target by UK Sport, the body which distributes Lottery money to Olympic sports, means Team GB need to at least match their achievements in Beijing four years. In 2008, Britain finished fourth in the table with 19 gold medals and a total of 47 medals from across 11 sports.
UK Sport chair Baroness Sue Campbell said: “This is a significant milestone for British sport. Thanks to the backing of our Government and the National Lottery over the past 15 years, and more recently the investment we have received from Team 2012, we are able to confirm that our goal of top four in the Olympic medal table at our home Games remains on track.”

Social Media Is the Message for Olympics – New York Times

At the Olympic Games in London, set to begin this month, the official motto of “swifter, higher, stronger” will be supplemented by a new label. Even the Olympic movement, which sometimes steps into the future with great caution, has warily accepted the idea.

Charles van Commenee Says He Will Quit If His Squad Fails – The Guardian

UK Athletics’ head coach, Charles van Commenee, has said he will take ultimate responsibility and fall on his sword if his 77-strong team fail to meet expectations at the London Olympics. The unveiling of the track and field squad, which includes the once-banned sprinter Dwain Chambers and his teenage rival Adam Gemili, was not without controversy. Selectors gambled by picking Lynsey Sharp for the 800m despite her recording only a B qualifying time this season. The selection of the European silver medallist meant four other athletes who have run faster times in the past two years, including the 2009 world bronze medallist Jenny Meadows, missed out and two places went unfilled under International Association of Athletics Federations rules.

A quarter of companies who participated in London’s biggest cross-sector Olympics “stress test” found that using alternative work locations and methods of transport were ineffective. The news raises concerns about how the capital’s businesses will cope during the games.

Transport for London expects about a million extra visitors in London during the games, resulting in three million extra public transport journeys each day. It is relying on companies to encourage staff to reduce pressure on the Tube by cycling or using the bus, or to work from home, among other measures.
